Recognition of prior learning is an assessment process that involves assessment of an
individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning)
to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit. RPL recognizes
that candidates may have gained knowledge and skills during their previous work
experience (paid or unpaid), in Australia. RPL takes into consideration an
individual’s existing skills and as a means of evaluating whether an individual can
demonstrate the required competencies associated with the relevant Australian
standards. This process is referred to as recognition of prior learning (RPL).
According to the Australian Qualifications Framework, RPL is the obtainment of a nationally recognised qualification, regulated by the department of Education and Training, through a detailed assessment of one’s own experience. It is possible that one obtain a complete qualification solely through RPL, though it is also common that a particular college (registered training organisation (RTO)) will require some additional training to fill the gap between what you currently know and what you still need to know.
Evidence will be considered in more detail, but overall, it is the means in which you validate your claim that your experience is sufficient for the obtainment of any given qualification. You will see in this site, through its blogs and/or pages what can be used for evidence.
Who delivers RPL? The agencies that can deliver any official certificates are RTOs. Currently within Australia, there are over 5,000 RTOs and there are thousands of units of learning modules and hundreds of distinct qualifications.
